A one-day workshop designed to cover technical aspects of CSS. It's aimed at developers but also anyone who wants to build highly flexible, easily manageable, standards-based websites with CSS and XHTML should attend. It's an in-depth course, taught by two of the most well-known advocates of standards and accessibility.

As a developer you'll probably be tasked with more technical concerns such as streamlining file size, optimizing http requests, and ensuring that your web sites and apps remain manageable and flexible. This workshop is perfect for you.

You'll be taught how to avoid conflicts and make CSS documents more logical, less error-prone, and more manageable by tapping into the cascade, inheritance and specificity as well as advanced selectors. There’ll also be plenty of time to ask specific questions on the day.

  • Semantics: what is its true significance and why how can it reduce file size and improve usability?
  • DIVs and classes: reducing their overuse and ready your markup for effective style
The Cascade, Inheritance and Specificity
  • Use the cascade to effectively manage CSS-based designs
  • Inheritance: using it to reduce file sizes and streamline CSS documents
  • Learn how to avoid conflicts within your style sheets
  • Find and resolve conflicts when they crop up

Mastering CSS Selectors
  • Learn all available selectors in modern browsers, including IE7
  • How to use descendent and child selectors to reduce overuse of classes

Who's speaking?

Molly (www.molly.com) is a well-known Web standards and accessibility advocate, instructor and author. She is Group Lead for the Web Standards Project (WaSP) and an invited expert to the HTML and Internationalisation GEO working groups at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Via each of these roles, Molly works to educate designers and developers on using Web technologies in practical ways to create highly sustainable, maintainable, accessible, interactive and beautiful Web sites for the global community.

Among her thirty-plus books is the The Zen of CSS Design, co-authored with Dave Shea. The book artfully showcases the most progressive csszengarden.com designs. Currently, Molly is authoring a book on the technical aspects of CSS Layout for O’Reilly Publishing. A popular and colourful individual, Molly has a particular passion for people, blogs, and the use of technology for social progress.

Andy Clarke is an internationally known designer, creative lead, speaker and consultant. His design agency, Stuff and Nonsense focuses on imaginative, accessible web development. His clients have included charities such as WWF, Save The Children and The Woodland Trust and commercial organisations such as Disney Store UK.

Andy is passionate about design and passionate about web standards and accessibility, often bridging the gap between design and code. He regularly educates designers and developers in the application of web standards during workshops and conferences.

Outside of his studio, Andy is a member of the Web Standards Project where he has provided creative lead to the organisation’s 2006 redesign. He is currently authoring his first book, Transcending CSS, The Fine Art of Web Design for Peachpit New Riders Publishing, which will be published in September 2006. Teaming up for Progress

Andy and Molly teamed up in 2005 to study and begin solving technical, creative and educational problems within the web design and development field. Through their workshops, seminars and on-site trainings, Andy and Molly are helping to bridge the gap between developers and designers; improve workflow by improving communication and techniques; and encourage and inspire people working on the Web to embrace a high standard of professionalism, aesthetics and efficiency.
