Workshop Outline

Spend the day with authors Dan Cederholm and Ethan Marcotte as they present the content of their brand new book: Handcrafted CSS: More Bulletproof Web Design. Walking you through the crafting of a fictional case study, Handcrafted CSS the workshop will share the details that matter most when designing for the web.

By encouraging “progressive enrichment” to utilize advanced CSS and CSS3 properties that work in browsers today, to reevaluating past methods and best practices and fluid, grid-based layouts. Dan and Ethan will show how craftsmanship can be applied to flexible, bulletproof, highly efficient and adaptable interfaces that make up a solid user experience.

Dan Cederholm

Dan Cederholm

Dan Cederholm is a web designer and author living in Salem, Massachusetts. He's the Founder and Principal of Simplebits, LLC, a tiny web design studio.

A recognized expert in the field of standards-based web design, Dan has worked with Google, MTV, AIGA, ESPN, Blogger, Fast Company, Inc.com, and others. With each new project, comes an opportunity to minimize markup and embrace the flexibility of CSS.

Dan co-founded Cork’d, a social network and reviewing application for wine aficionados, and launched IconShoppe, a storefront for stock web icons hand-crafted by SimpleBits.

He is the author of two popular books: Bulletproof Web Design (New Riders, 2005) and Web Standards Solutions (Friends of ED, 2004). Dan also runs the popular weblog SimpleBits, where he writes articles and commentary on the web, technology and life.

Dan enjoys sharing his simplistic approach to web design, while spreading the word on the standards-based markup and style techniques he's collected by speaking at conferences and corporations world-wide.

Ethan Marcotte

Ethan Marcotte

A web designer/developer living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Ethan works as the Interactive Design Director for Happy Cog, a design studio with offices in New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. With over a decade of experience working online, Ethan has worked with such clients as New York Magazine, Harvard University, and the World Wide Web Consortium. His work demonstrates a deep-seated passion for the intersection of quality code and compelling design.

Ethan collaborated with Happy Cog founder Jeffrey Zeldman on the third edition of Designing With Web Standards (New Riders, forthcoming). He is also a contributing author and technical editor at A List Apart, the magazine for people who make websites. He has been a featured speaker at An Event Apart, the SXSW Interactive festival, AIGA’s In Control conference, and several Boston-area universities.

He spends entirely too much time online, and would like to be an unstoppable robot ninja when he grows up. Beep

The Venue - Wallacespace St Pancras

The Carson Workshop will be taking place at a Wallacespace venue, centrally located only a stone’s throw from St Pancras, King’s Cross and Euston stations. It used to be the Callard & Bowser toffee factory and all of the rooms have high ceilings and large factory windows ensuring that the spaces are flooded with natural light from morning to evening. The worshop will be held on the 2nd floor in the 'Big Room' and the adjacent rooms.
